RIP BOB MEISTRELL

I saw Bob a few times but never had the pleasure to meet him.
All I knew is that he was a South Bay legend, ocean minded person, an ocean pioneer with great stories to tell and the creator of the bodyblobe/dive n surf empire.

Here is some info I gathered from different medias for you to have a glimpse of Bob's life. if didn't know him..

"Robert Fischer Meistrell was born on July 31, 1928, in Boonville, Mo., the youngest of seven siblings, was hours younger than his brother Bill.

When they were 4, their investment banker father was murdered by a former business partner. The family moved west in the 1940s, landing in Manhattan Beach when the twins were 16, they became Los Angeles County lifeguards

The boys took to the ocean immediately. This time, they had a real diving helmet — purchased from a neighbor for $25 after a previous owner had drowned in it.

After graduating from El Segundo High School, Meistrell served in the Army at Ft. Ord on the Monterey Peninsula during the Korean War.

In 1953, the brothers rounded up $1,800 and bought into Morgan's Dive N' Surf shop in Redondo Beach, where wetsuits — however cumbersome and irritating — were slowly starting to sell.

"'Fifties surfers in general rejected the rubber suits as both uncomfortable and unmanly," but the Meistrells persisted. They bought out Morgan and, like others along the beachfront, saw their sales rocket after the surfing movie "Gidget" was released in 1959.
"Surf movies, surf magazines, surf music — it all turned into a cultural expression that never calmed down," With development of wetsuits and lighter-weight surfboards, the sport's popularity catapulted. In 1965, the Meistrells founded Body Glove.

At 84, Bob Meistrell died Sunday aboard his 72-foot yacht Disappearance off Catalina Island, where he was planning to help run a paddleboard race. The cause was a heart attack"
"Dad died doing what he loved" He was in the deepest corner of the engine room just trying to get the engines running so he could get back in the race.”

RIP Bob, thanks for everything you did for the Ocean tribe. We appreciate it immensely.

The Mistrell legacy will live on way beyond our days!

BENEATH THE SURFACE in Laguna

Sat Feb 16th, 2013

My longtime spanish friend and experienced diver Jorge Suarez called me last Friday night and asked me if I wanted to go spear fishing at Crystal Cove in Laguna on Saturday morning...I've been there in the past without the proper equipment and always wanted to come back and document the beauty that lies beneath the surface.

That same night I run to Sport Chalet and rented a 7mm diving Body Globe suit for $15, weight belt & weights (4x4 lbs ea=16 lbs). Spent around 20 bucks. I already had a mask, snorkle, knife & fins.
To give you an idea
I'm aprox 170 Lbs and used 16 lbs of weight
Just in case you get curious and want to explore the shallows.
Remember 'Never Dive alone'

Saturday was an epic day from the start; the sun was out with clear blue skies not a cloud on sight and the surf was around 2 feet. 70 degree weather in winter? California Lovin'

I wanted to give special thanks to my bud Jorge & friends for the good times, Emerald Bay security for letting us leave their premises and super stoked we made it back safe. I owe you big time bro ROOOTS!
